A Message from the Board on the 2024 Election

Dear Costa Mesa Alliance for Better Streets Supporters and Members:

As we enter the heart of this election season, we are reminded of the vital role each of us plays in shaping the future of Costa Mesa.

As you know, we are a nonpartisan advocacy organization and we cannot endorse any specific candidates due to our nonprofit status. However we can, and do, encourage all of you to participate actively in this crucial civic process.

Your vote and your voice matter. And this year, more than ever, it’s important to consider how local leadership impacts our shared vision for safer, more accessible, and sustainable streets. These issues cross party lines. Fostering active transportation—whether it be biking, walking, or other forms of sustainable transit—will improve the quality of life for all residents. Therefore,we encourage you not only to vote but to engage your neighbors in meaningful conversations about these issues.

To help you make informed decisions, we have compiled the 2024 City Council Candidate Questionnaire focused on the key issues surrounding active transportation. We asked the City Council and Mayoral candidates to share their views on policies that affect our streets, infrastructure, and the overall walkability and bike-friendliness of our city. Their responses (and non-responses) are revealing. We encourage you to share this questionnaire widely and to use it as a resource when deciding who will best support your vision for Costa Mesa’s future. We urge you to determine which local candidates share your values rather than relying on short-hand like party identification or endorsements.

Democracy thrives when we participate. Beyond casting your own ballot, we urge you to be an advocate in your community. Talk with your friends, family, and neighbors about the local election and the importance of issues like pedestrian safety, bike infrastructure, and sustainable transportation. And if a candidate stands out to you as being a particularly helpful advocate of these issues, we encourage you to reach out to his campaign and to campaign for him directly. Personnel is policy, and nowhere is that more true than on the local level. Your work today will help shape a more inclusive, vibrant, and pleasant Costa Mesa tomorrow.

Thank you for being a part of this movement and for your ongoing support. Let’s work together to ensure that Costa Mesa remains a great place to live, work, and travel—on foot, by bike, or whatever means you choose.

Sincerely,
The Board of the Costa Mesa Alliance for Better Streets
