Action Alert: Santa Ana Bike Lane Gap

Hello all!

Thanks to YOUR voices to our city staff and leadership, the city is taking action to possibly close a gap in the otherwise continuous bike lane on Santa Ana Avenue so that bicyclists can more comfortably–and safely–use the street too. But we need people to show up to the meetings. Tomorrow night (Tuesday, June 25th) at 6pm at Kaiser Elementary School, city staff will present the proposal and listen to what the community wants. Those who received the official notices live in the vicinity of the gap, but there are plenty of people who use the bike lanes (or have loved ones that use the bike lanes) that may want to show up in support. So please spread the word to your friends and neighbors!

While our city’s “drivable” network is extensive, our “bikeable” network is still very fragmented, frequently leaving bicyclists stranded or in unsafe situations. This is an example of that, and we now have the opportunity to make what (we think) is a simple and obvious fix. The gap is already unfortunate because Santa Ana Avenue is such a heavily utilized bike route by beachgoers, students, commuters, and those going to and from 17th St., but it especially egregious because this gap is right in front of an elementary school! Let’s make sure that tomorrow night the message is loud and clear that we want our streets to be safe, comfortable, and convenient for people of all ages and abilities.

We hope to see you there!
