Action Alert! Community Bike Safety Workshop THIS WEEKEND and Help Us Save ATP Funding!

Action Item #1 - Join us for a bike safety workshop!

We will be there with bells (and lights) on!

First off we have a big event this weekend that missed the publishing deadline for our last newsletter — the City of Costa Mesa is adding to its bicycle safety efforts by putting on a Community Bike Safety Workshop THIS SATURDAY, May 25, from 10am - 2pm at the Costa Mesa Senior Center, located at 695 W. 19th Street. Learn new bike skills, get free helmets and bike repairs. We will be there!

… And while you are there we would love if you could give the City some positive feedback on the W. 19th Street and Placentia Avenue improvements. Costa Mesa is quickly becoming known around Orange County as a leader in active transportation infrastructure, but being a leader can be a lonely place. Don’t think you’ll make it but still want to provide feedback? Email us at info@cmabs.org and we’ll help you get your note to the right place.

Action Item #2: Speak up for active transportation funding!

Stop almost $600 in active transportation budget cuts!

As you may have have heard, California is facing very difficult budget cuts this year — and on the chopping block is the State’s active transportation program (ATP). The proposed cut is a whopping $600 million, even while Caltrans’s year-over-year budget will still increase by $1 billion 😡 So a huge coalition of nonprofits, activist groups and grassroots coalitions (see photo) are pushing back, calling on the State Legislature to restore this critical funding.

Want to do something to help? Here’s what you can do: tell Costa Mesa’s State Assembly Member, Cottie Petrie-Norris, that balancing the budget on the back of life-saving active transportation projects is unacceptable, especially in an era of unprecedented pedestrian and bicycle strikes and fatalities. We’ve got a form email you can work off of linked right here. Just click, customize, and hit send!

That’s all for now!
