Hey everyone! As always there is a lot happening to make our streets better in Costa Mesa. Let’s dive in ⤵️

Strong Towns OC Active Transportation Forum is this Thursday!

We’re joining our friends at Strong Towns OC and North OC Bikes TOMORROW, Thursday, February 27, to help push the message of active transportation in Orange County. Fullerton is one of the few OC cities that is taking this topic seriously, and we want to help their momentum! Consider joining us tomorrow at 6pm. There will be guest speakers, boothing organizations, and new people to meet.

Walk audit is back, this time with a social afterwards at MoonGoat Coffee!

Please join us for a walk audit on Sunday afternoon, March 2nd! We will meet at MoonGoat at 1pm, walk a stretch of Placentia Avenue together, and arrive back at MoonGoat between 2:30 and 3:00pm. Over coffee we’ll discuss our findings, what needs attention, and figure out where our next audit should be. Feel free to join us for either or both!

We want to make walk audits a regular (monthly) community event to stay focused and to get used to engaging intentionally with our surroundings. This walk is open to anyone who wants to join us.

MoonGoat Coffee is located at 1985 Placentia Avenue Costa Mesa. See you there!

Daylighting in the News!

Those of you following along with our newsletters and public comments were likely well aware of recently passed AB 413, which prohibits parking within 20 feet (basically, one long car length) of a marked or unmarked crosswalk. However, this seems to have come as a surprise to City Hall. The Daily Pilot has the story, noting that, given the city has done very little to prepare the public for this change, the Costa Mesa Police Department will forgo enforcing AB 413 until March 1. See, that’s why you’ve got to subscribe to the CMABS newsletter!

The Trump Administration freezes/unfreezes/refreezes federal funding; will local safe streets projects be affected?

Thankfully the answer so far is “no”, but as with many things in this new year, that might be subject to change. If you have been following national news, you may be aware that the new Trump Administration sent out a number of executive orders affecting federal programs, including ones that fund local infrastructure projects. While these freezes have been lifted by courts while litigation works itself out, it hasn’t been clear whether some of the local projects funded in whole or in part by federal grants were in the clear. Thankfully, at the last Active Transportation Committee meeting, we got some clarity: for now, the most recent federally-funded project, the grant to plan the safe routes to school action plan, appears to be in the clear. Phew! We will keep an eye on this story as it develops.

Nothing is on our radar for this week! But that doesn’t mean we should take the week off. Got a problem with your street? Report it using the Costa Mesa 311 app! Too big for 311? Write your City Council representative. The more they hear about how we are using our streets and the challenges we face, the more likely we will see action!

That’s all for now. Have a great week!
